Muar Chee (Glutinous Rice Balls)

A flavoursome snack from Malaysia!

  • 100g glutinous rice flour, sifted
  • 175ml water
  • 2 Tablespoons shallot or vegetable oil (shallot oil is more fragrant)
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1 Tablespoons shallot oil for greasing bowl

 For garnish

  • 100g roasted peanuts
  • 20g toasted sesame seeds
  • 20g fried shallots
  • 3 Tablespoons sugar


  1. In a bowl, gradually incorporate the rice flour and the water, stir in the shallot oil and salt.
  2. Grease a heat-proof rice bowl, pour the flour mixture into the bowl and steam for 20 minutes, until the paste becomes slightly translucent. 
  3. Set aside to cool until just warm.
  4. Using a food processor, process the roasted peanuts and sugar to a very fine powder, add the sesame seeds and place on a plate or tray.
  5. Scoop out teaspoon size balls of the steamed paste and place on top of the peanut mixture.
  6. Toss in the peanut mixture until well coated.  Repeat until all the paste is used.
  7. Top with fried shallots and serve immediately.
